Healthcare In Lichfield
Our new display focuses on 100 years of Healthcare in the City.
On display now until 2nd September is "A Century of Service", an exhibition with artefacts which takes a look back at the old hospitals in and around the City which have been replaced by the new £17 million Samuel Johnson Community Hospital.
The exhibition looks at how public health in Lichfield has been revolutionised since the Industrial Revolution. The informative display panels contain information on Erasmus Darwin's design for a "rotative couch" which made the insane vomit and sleep, the intellect of Sir John Floyer MD of Lichfield (1649-1734) and the history of cleaned piped water into Lichfield.
Each hospital tells its own story: St. Michael's began life as a workhouse, Hammerwich was built privately for injured coal miners, St. Matthews reflected changes in law to treat the insane with dignity, and the Victoria was funded by the local population who wanted their own hospital.
Research was done by a group of local people who have worked in the health service or have an interest in local history.
